Martin County License Transactions and Application Planning

Buying or selling a Martin County liquor license

A license transaction should begin with a clear operating plan. Tell us whether you are buying an existing business, opening a new premises, or selling a license separately. Those projects raise different questions about ownership, the location, and the privileges needed.

Start with the seller’s license record

Before negotiating a Martin County quota license purchase, request the license number, current owner information, and status. Compare the official record with the proposed transaction. Florida ABT explains that a liquor license cannot be transferred outside its county of original issuance, so a license advertised elsewhere in Florida is not automatically an option for this project.

Distinguish the negotiated purchase price from government licensing and transfer fees. Ask for a written breakdown of the transaction costs and any conditions that must be satisfied before closing. An advertised price alone does not describe the full project budget.

Choose a path that fits the business

  • Restaurant: Consider whether a special restaurant license is suitable before buying a quota license. The exemption has qualification and continuing operating requirements.
  • Bar or lounge: Confirm the required full-liquor privileges and the proposed premises approvals before committing to a purchase.
  • Beer and wine operation: Review Florida’s non-quota beer-and-wine options and whether customers will drink on site or purchase sealed products.
  • Package store: Match the license privileges to off-premises sales and verify the location’s approval requirements.

A permanent business license is different from an event permit

If the project is a temporary event rather than a continuing business, use the event approval process that applies to the venue. Martin County’s Special Event Handbook asks permittees to provide an approved Florida alcohol license or permit. An event authorization should not be treated as a substitute for the ongoing beverage license your restaurant, bar, or store needs.

Prepare these details for a licensing review

  1. The proposed street address and premises layout.
  2. The buyer or applicant entity and ownership information.
  3. The business model, food-service plan, and intended alcohol sales.
  4. Any existing license number and seller documentation.
  5. Available local approvals and unanswered zoning questions.

ABT uses DBPR’s online system for beverage license applications. Organizing these details before filing helps you identify gaps instead of assuming a business purchase automatically transfers the seller’s approvals.
